>Schools teach kids that their personal worth is measured by impersonal artifacts

I thought the lesson was to get through required temporary bs to just to get to the finish line before real life starts.

>Young love

I think you misunderstood the point of the /r9k/ meme. It is about the freedom from transactionality - young schooldays love did not involve swipping through 500 people, it was within people of shared context, within the tribe of shared context. No one was comparing or could compare the earning potential or other status signal or otherwise calculating compatiblity charts. Instead of compatibility, it was possible for initial compatibilizing around each other, not messed with by previous preference structures or by various theories similarities to examples seen as it comes with age. Interest could be just on the person themselves directly as granted by the context - which can never happen again. 'Missing out on young love' meme is about missing out the context, not missing out being able to mimic footballplayer and cheerleader making out.

Not disagreeing with point of your article though.
